SUSTAIN-A-WAVE

The “Eco Friendly Sport” project focuses on promoting sustainability within the sports sector by integrating eco-friendly practices into sports organizations and activities. The project seeks to raise awareness of environmental impact and inspire change through education, tools, and resources for sport organizations to adopt sustainable practices. By engaging sports clubs, athletes, and community organizations, the project aims to reduce waste, promote energy efficiency, and encourage sustainable transportation methods. The project also advocates for sustainable event management practices, waste reduction in sports venues, and eco-conscious merchandise production. Ultimately, it aspires to make sports more sustainable, fostering an environment where participants and stakeholders actively contribute to preserving natural resources.

Key learning objectives:

  • To promote sustainable practices within the sports sector.
  • To educate sports organizations and communities about reducing their environmental footprint.
  • To create awareness on sustainable waste management and energy consumption in sports activities.
  • To foster a commitment to long-term sustainability within sports communities.

The project aligns with SDG 12 (Responsible Consumption and Production) by promoting eco-friendly practices within the sports sector, reducing waste, and encouraging sustainable event management. It also supports SDG 13 (Climate Action) by fostering environmental awareness and urging climate-conscious behavior in sports.

Importance of watersport:

Water sports play a key role in this project by offering unique opportunities to engage with the environment and raise awareness about water conservation and sustainability. Through activities like kayaking, sailing, and rowing, participants can directly experience the challenges posed to water bodies and aquatic ecosystems. By integrating sustainable practices into water sports, the project encourages respect for nature and supports the overall message of environmental preservation.

Added values:

  • Direct connection to aquatic ecosystems: Water sports give participants firsthand experience with water bodies, helping to foster an appreciation for their importance.
  • Increased engagement: By using water sports as a medium, the project targets a wide range of individuals who are already interested in such activities, thus increasing awareness and participation in sustainability initiatives.
  • Promotion of responsible behavior: Through sustainable water sports practices, the project advocates for actions such as reducing waste and conserving water, which can lead to long-term environmental benefits.

Target group:

  • Sports organizations: Clubs and associations interested in adopting sustainable practices.
  • Athletes: Individual sportspeople and professionals aiming to engage in eco-friendly sports practices.
  • Community organizations: NGOs and local organizations promoting sustainability in sports.
  • General public: Especially those involved or interested in water sports, fitness activities, and environmental preservation.

Good practices:

  • Sustainable Event Management: The project includes guidance on organizing eco-friendly sports events, reducing waste, and conserving energy during events.
  • Resource Efficiency: Encouraging the use of eco-friendly materials, reducing single-use plastics, and promoting sustainable transportation for events.
  • Collaborations with Eco-conscious Organizations: By collaborating with environmental NGOs, the project ensures sustainability is at the core of all sports activities and initiatives.

Synergies:

  • Partnerships with water sports clubs: Collaboration with water sports clubs offers the chance to implement sustainability practices directly within the sector.
  • Educational Modules: Developing training and educational content that can be incorporated into local and regional sports initiatives, focusing on environmental responsibility and sustainability.
